LEARN THE ESSENTIALS OF HERBALISM

November - April

CREATE YOUR OWN APOTHECARY WITH FRESH HERBS✶

May - October

Learn  herbal  medicne

Using fresh herbs is the key to getting the highest nutrient and medicinal benefit from the plants. In this CSA you will learn how to work with fresh herbs, proper extraction and preservation techniques, and how to use your creations for health and well-being.

Medicinal plants are abundant in micronutrients and phytochemicals such as flavonoids, alkaloids, and saponins. During our coursework and demos we highlight how these plant chemicals are best extracted and what they will do for you. Each constituent has an action in the body that will help you maintain a healthy, happy, energetic lifestyle.

Medicinal herbs are classified according to actions that describe their overall effect such as…

  • What are they and how do they both energize and calm you? What is the best way to use them?

  • Find out how this class of herbs supports your lungs, digestion, and heart.

  • Detoxification is key to health, and herbs have a key role alongside a healthy diet.

  • Digestion is such an important function, and if something goes wrong you’re going to feel it. Most culinary herbs have a role in aiding digestion. We explore how to incorporate both culinary and medicinal herbs in your meals and through additional medicinal support.

  • Get a handle on anxiety and normalize your sleep patterns. Learn the subtle difference between nervine herbs to create your routine.

  • What is a CSA?

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA), is a direct partnership between the farm and its consumers, or shareholders. When you become a CSA Member you are purchasing in advance a share of the upcoming season’s crop that is provided in our bi-weekly box for pick up. Your investment in the farm provides much needed capital used for seeds, equipment, and skilled labor. In exchange our CSA Members have first access to the farm’s diverse selection of fresh herbs, many of which are only available through this program.

  • What is Community Herbalism?

Community Herbalism is the availability of plant medicine through an exchange of plants, preparations, and folk knowledge or providing herbal care following formal study of materia medica. Community herbalists can be trained through traditional or non-traditional methods such as self-study or apprenticeships (American Herbalist Guild, n.d.). Community herbalists have varying levels of experience and are mindful to work within their scope of education. Herbalism is a life long practice and one’s gained expertise of traditional and historical applications may be shared at any stage to help others. When we recommend herbs to family members, friends, and for self-care we are engaging in a form of community herbalism.

our growiNg practices

Furnace Creek Farm is part of a watershed habitat and we really care about protecting it. This means no chemicals, GMO seeds, or growing shortcuts of any kind. All our plants are grown in soil and are irrigated with water from our well. Because these medicinal plants are used to improve our health, we steward their ecosystem so together we thrive.

When you sign up you’ll receive a welcome email to get started. The Mentorship program

HOW WILL I USE THESE HERBS?

You will receive a combination of culinary and medicinal herbs. Most all of the herbs can be incorporated into your meals, and also have the added benefit of healing properties. If you are looking to build your pantry or create a home apothecary this will be perfect for you! The fresh herbs boxes start in May for the spring session and end in October with the fall session. Through a combination of video, group Zoom sessions, and pick-up location workshops I will share recipes and demonstrate how to work with the herbs in your box.

WHAT IS THE DEADLINE TO SIGN UP?

Sign up by March 31st.

DO I HAVE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE MENTORSHIP GROUP?

No, of course not. If you’re just looking for access to fresh herbs that you can’t find anywhere else, just let us know and we’ll have your box ready for pick up. You can also observe and absorb any of the mentorship content as it feels best for you.

CAN I DO THE CSA WITH A PARTNER?

Yes! Based on our experience, we found this CSA works best as a full season because the educational component builds as you go along. However, we understand your schedule or budget may not allow for three seasons of herbal medicine making. So, we invite you to find a CSA partner to work together on the herb box and we will provide a second login for them to access all of the educational materials, demonstrations, and Zooms. Our intention is to provide continuity for the program and flexibility for you to enjoy it.

WHAT IS YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH HERBS?

Many of you know me, Grace Galanti, from the markets or my skincare studio in PA. I have been practicing herbalism and whole food nutrition for over twenty years. I graduated from Bastyr Univeristy in Seattle, WA with a degree in Herbal Sciences in 2004 and moved back to the agricultural area of the Oley Valley where I grew up to begin growing medicinal herbs. Over this time period I worked through chronic health conditions of asthma, fatigue, and a compromised immune system. Many of the herbs I grow are the same plants I rely on to maintain my own health. I started herb farming ten years ago and have been at Greenmarket for the past since 2016. Time does fly! I try to spend as much time as possible at market to communicate how to use the herbs but often there is a lot going on at the stand. My hope is through this CSA I can convey more thoroughly how to work with the herbs.
